The Hard Road
A jar of clear wine worth ten thousand coins, precious delicacies on a jade plate worth a myriad of money.
But I cannot eat or drink, with my chopsticks paused and my cup untouched, my heart lost in confusion as I look around with drawn sword in hand.
I desire to cross the frozen Yellow River, to ascend the snowcovered mountains of Taihang.
In my leisure, I fish by the emerald creek, and suddenly find myself sailing in a dream at the edge of the sun.
The road is hard, the road is hard, with many paths diverging, where am I now?
When the strong wind comes, breaking the waves, I will hoist the cloud sail and cross the boundless sea.
"行路难" by Li Bai is a poem from the Tang Dynasty that expresses the hardships and difficulties of life's journey. It portrays the poet's struggles and challenges on the path of life, as well as his determination and will to survive in adversity.
The first two lines depict the poet's past prosperity and abundant life with "A jar of clear wine worth ten thousand coins, precious delicacies on a jade plate worth a myriad of money." However, the next two lines "But I cannot eat or drink, with my chopsticks paused and my cup untouched, my heart lost in confusion as I look around with drawn sword in hand" convey the poet's loss of enjoyment and direction in life, leading to confusion and bewilderment.
The following two lines "I desire to cross the frozen Yellow River, to ascend the snowcovered mountains of Taihang" describe the harsh environment and multiple difficulties the poet faces, metaphorically representing the obstacles and challenges on life's path. The final two lines "In my leisure, I fish by the emerald creek, and suddenly find myself sailing in a dream at the edge of the sun" express the poet's search for solace and hope amidst adversity, seeking inner peace and liberation through fishing and dreams.
The ending lines "The road is hard, the road is hard, with many paths diverging, where am I now? When the strong wind comes, breaking the waves, I will hoist the cloud sail and cross the boundless sea" convey the poet's confusion and uncertainty on the path of life, but also reveal his optimism and steadfast belief. He believes that as long as he faces difficulties headon and perseveres, there will always be opportunities to overcome hardships and achieve his ideals.
