夫名士者，志在高矣。自非物之所系，弗屑以尘，而少由人庸；崇节明义，慕古尚贤。

A true gentleman aims for the heights. He does not attach himself to material possessions and trivial matters, but rather pursues morality and virtue, and respects and emulates the ancients.

本朝有陶潜，其为人也，最当此道。其少时，为郡主簿，少与边境接，闻胡乱入，常有亡命之虞。

During our dynasty, there was a man named Tao Qian, who epitomized the gentleman's path. When he was young, he served as a county recorder and was frequently exposed to border conflicts with the barbarians. He often risked his life on the line of duty.

及至举孝廉，舍官不以奉直，归耕乡里。尝乘小舟于泛滥水中，值风强浪大，舟覆于水。既而寓止寒居，辟地为园，多树奇石，手自荷锄，蔬果葱茏，以供所好。

When he passed the examination for filial piety, he gave up his official position and returned to his hometown to farm. On one occasion, he went out on a small boat and encountered a storm that caused the boat to capsize. After finding shelter and a place to stay, he built a garden in a deserted area and planted many trees and exotic rocks. He worked with his own hands, tending to his vegetables and fruits and enjoying the fruits of his labor.

凡所著作，多记其园亭之事。

In his writings, Tao Qian often mentioned his garden and pavilions.

时人谓之“陶园”。

People at the time referred to it as "Tao Garden".

苍然楚山，尤以临清江。江上多峰峦，波澜迭起；江两浸润，多芳菲之木。春夏之际，花之鲜烂，又有众禽鸣舞其中。

The green mountains of Chu, especially those overlooking the Qingjiang River, were particularly beautiful. The river was surrounded by numerous peaks, with waves cresting continuously. On both sides of the river were lush trees and flowers that bloomed brightly in the spring and summer. Birds sang and danced among the flowers and trees.

此陶氏之所好，书于其篇，使人领略其园之佳，而物之态也。

Through Tao Qian's writing, people could appreciate the beauty of his garden and the natural surroundings.

后人称之“陶潜之清”。

Later generations referred to it as "Tao Qian's Serene Garden".
